Our digital assets can be equally important. But preserving those assets safely after our death is not entirely trivial.

A quote from the article:

Inheritance, although typically a tangible estate to bequeath to your loved ones, can also be in the form of  digital property such as photos, movies, home videos and emails stored on a computer. This area of digital asset protection is particularly confusing and may only allow for individuals to leave their digital assets if they stored their online property with a particular manufacturer/company.

Prepare for Google Account Password Recovery http://www.digital-asset-protection.com/uncategorized/prepare-for-google-account-password-recovery/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=prepare-for-google-account-password-recovery http://www.digital-asset-protection.com/uncategorized/prepare-for-google-account-password-recovery/#comments Fri, 28 Oct 2011 09:42:11 +0000 Peter http://www.digital-asset-protection.com/?p=206 Forgot your password? or your account is no longer under your control? Has the password of your google account changed without your notice? Google solves your problem of recovering your passwords. Don’t worry, Google can restore your access with the security information you have provided while creating your account. So make sure you have these mechanisms in place.

Various methods by which you can recover google passwords:

  1. Having a Secondary email already set with your account.
  2. Get a verification code to your mobile
  3. Answer a security question that you must have selected while creating your account

Firstly, when you are not able to recover your account click on “Can’t access your account” present below “sign in” button. You will be redirected to a page which asks you to enter your email id. After this you will be asked to type the captcha image appeared above the text box. After this you will redirected to page where you need select one among the options that will be present to recover your password.

If you have attached a secondary email to your account, then you will be able to see and select the radio button “Get a password reset link at my recovery email: YOUR_SECONDARY_EMAIL_ADDR”. If not so you will not be able to see this radio button. This is the primary method of recovering password for your google account. You will receive a reset link to your secondary email account. On clicking that you will be redirected to password reset page of you google account.

If you haven’t attached your email address to your existing gmail account, then you have a second option to receive a verification code to your mobile. You just need to remember your mobile number to process this. Select the radio button “Get a verification code on my phone:********23″, enter your full phone number and you will receive a confirmation code on your mobile. Once you have received the confirmation code click on “continue” button. You will be redirected to a page where in you need to enter the verification code, the one which you have received on your mobile.

If you didn’t set your phone number to your google account, you have one last option of answering the security question, the one you should have set while creating your google account. Select the radio button “Answer my security question”, you can see your question, answer the question and click on continue.

If you have successfully done one among the above 3 methods of security verification, then you will be redirected to password reset page. Where you need to type the new password for your google account twice and so you can change your password and gain access to your account again. So, you have successfully recovered your google account.

In the seventies it was the minicomputer, in the eighties it was the personal computer, in the nineties the Internet appeared, and over the past few years we have seen the rise of cloud computing.

All these innovation have a theme in common. They are ‘disruptive’ innovations. And they will disrupt careers as well.

Let us assume that you are quite knowledgeable about information technology (IT) in general, and actually are a bit of an expert in some specific areas, if not more than that. You have heard about cloud computing, but you are not sure how it is going to impact your work. You might be a bit worried about that. It might look as if your work could be done better and cheaper ‘in the cloud’. And in fact, you may be right. A lot of IT services are done cheaper, better and faster in the cloud.

Remember the travel industry before the Internet? A whole layer of jobs was eliminated when people started to do their own booking on the internet. The same will happen with a whole layer of IT jobs that will disappear as business sees a way to self-service their way into IT. Yet, even today there are travel agencies in business, but only those that have specialized in catering for special needs are still alive.

So you need to act to stay in the race.

Protect Your Data With Disk Image Software http://www.digital-asset-protection.com/uncategorized/protect-your-data-with-disk-image-software/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=protect-your-data-with-disk-image-software http://www.digital-asset-protection.com/uncategorized/protect-your-data-with-disk-image-software/#comments Fri, 16 Sep 2011 13:30:09 +0000 Mod M http://www.digital-asset-protection.com/?p=173 Disk image software is much more effective than regular backup software for protecting your data. It does so much more, because it basically records an entire image of your hard disk. This means that, in the event of a system failure, you can simply restore this disk image and your computer will be back to normal again as though nothing went wrong in the first place. As you use your computer, not only do you install new files and programs on it and add bookmarks to your favorite websites and – you also do a great deal more. Consider all of the subtle changes such as interface customizations, file associations, program settings and such. After working with your computer for some time, you will become accustomed to having a personalized interface and a cozy, familiar workplace. All of this can change in an instant in the event of a major system failure. There are many reasons why this can happen. Your computer can crash at any time and, in worst case scenarios, your computer might not even be able to boot up at all when you turn it back on. If this is the case, there is likely a major problem with the hard disk and/or the master boot record. Without going too much into the technical details, these problems can make your data inaccessible. Although standard disk recovery software will help you to retrieve most, if not all of your data, it simply does not provide the same level of security as disk imaging software uses. You will always be missing things unless you have a complete image of the hard disk stored safely and separately.Active@ Disk Image is a professional solution for both home and office scenarios. It overcomes the many problems and shortcomings associated with standard recovery software and data backup solutions by simply backing up your entire disk and making a mirror image of it. It uses the shadow copy technique and it does this extremely well, providing the features that you need for greater simplicity and enhanced reliability. Being able to make a disk image makes recovery operations much simpler and you can largely leave such operations unattended. The disk image software is easy to use and quick to configure. Using Active@ Disk Image, you can select the entire disk, including the one containing your Windows installation folder and anything else. The image created will contain all data required for a complete system restore in the event of a system failure.

Restoring the system disk or the partition may seem a little complicated at first. Windows cannot be running during recovery operations. Recovery operations are carried out using Active@ Boot Disk, a component of the disk image software which allows you to boot from any USB drive or CD or DVD and run the recover software from there, outside of Windows. You can learn more about Active@ Disk Image at disk-image.net. A download is available here along with a video presentation and demonstration of the software. Unified Threat Management (UTM) is a comprehensive solution which has recently emerged in the network security industry. Since its advent in 2004, the worldwide market of UTM has gained the market of worth $1.2 billion in 2007 and is predicted to achieve 35-40% compounded annual growth rate by the end of 2011.

In theory, UTM is an evolution of the traditional firewall into an all inclusive security product. UTM can perform multiple security functions ranging from network firewalling, network intrusion prevention and gateway antivirus (AV), gateway anti-spam, VPN, content filtering, load balancing to an on-appliance reporting in one single appliance.

The need of an all integrated security system emerged in the wake of increasing number of attacks on corporate information systems. More incidence and cases of hacking/cracking, viruses and worms were being reported. Also, the technique with which newer attack systems target the end users as the weakest link in an enterprise, was posing serious threat for organizations. For SMEs, unauthorized employee access and data security were also major business concerns. If avoided, this could result in damaged reputation or loss of confidential data leading to huge financial losses and legal liabilities.

In today’s data intensive world, enterprises need to choose the UTM devices rather more carefully. In order to simplify the approach towards security, network administrators leave disparate point solutions for integrated coverage such a VPN connectivity, antivirus, intrusion detection. Some UTMs dilute the defense and make networks vulnerable to attacks. It needs to be understood that a UTM has to tackle key security issues without leaving vital features such as management, reporting and updateability out of the context.

With dozens of UTMs available in market today, customers should focus on a device that is a winning combination of centralized management, proven solutions, advanced reporting and easy updates. There are several UTM devices available in the market. UTMs have 8 layer technology which treats user as the 8th layer network stack. In UTM, the IT administration can create user identity based security policies. The management has the complete visibility and control over activities of assigned users.

The Key Points of UTM:

• A single UTM appliance works as a comprehensive security solution.
• Safeguards and manages a company’s security strategy.
• Simplified Security at its best
• Reduced technical training requirements for IT. Only one product is to learn.
• No multiple software installation and maintenance
• Easy Management: Plug & Play Architecture, Web-based GUI for management
• Performance: Zero-hour protection without compromising on the network performance

Utilizing a Managed Security Services Provider http://www.digital-asset-protection.com/uncategorized/utilizing-a-managed-security-services-provider/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=utilizing-a-managed-security-services-provider http://www.digital-asset-protection.com/uncategorized/utilizing-a-managed-security-services-provider/#comments Fri, 16 Sep 2011 13:26:55 +0000 Mod M http://www.digital-asset-protection.com/?p=182

For businesses, utilizing a managed security service provider offers a way to reduce costs and to increase the level of security on your network at the same time. While you are going about the process of doing your everyday business, the security service is making certain that your network is safe from threats and, most importantly, the people who work at the service provider are always up to date on the latest threats and able to provide you with solutions to deal with them as they become known.

Thinking Ahead

Too many businesses think about their security needs retroactively. Using a managed security services provider allows you to take a proactive approach to security and to reap the benefits that come with doing so.

As an example, any business out there can be relatively certain that, at some point, they are going to have an incident where they need a security professional to help them deal with a virus, an intrusion or some other incident. If you have a managed security provider working with your business, you’re insulated against these threats and, best of all, your network is being monitored for signs of them at all times. Among the benefits of having one of these providers is the fact that you don’t have to pay the very high costs of wages to have these professionals at your own business. By contracting the service out to a provider, you let the contractor take care of making sure that the right people are on staff and that those people are provided with the tools they need to provide top-notch service.

Better Performance

In some cases, the same things that constitute threats to network security reduce performance on the network overall. This is a good reason to consider having a managed security services provider work with your business. In making certain that your network is always up to date, you sometimes gain benefits that include enhancements to the software that you use that also increase usability. Oftentimes, improving security and improving performance go hand-in-hand.

Managed security services also tend to lower the costs of maintenance on your network. When your network is being maintained properly at all times, it’s much less likely that you’re going to fall behind to the extent that you need to catch up with repairs, patches and other improvements in the future. Because of this, businesses that take the time to attend to their security needs properly oftentimes enjoy much reduced maintenance costs over the long haul.

When your office is closed and your employees have gone home for the day, a managed security services provider is still making certain that your network is secure. This ensures that there aren’t any windows of opportunity for a hacker to get into your network when there won’t be anyone there to catch their intrusion while it is in progress. For businesses that rely on the tightest security possible, having a managed security service provide for their network integrity is a huge benefit in myriad ways.

The PCI Security Standards Council http://www.digital-asset-protection.com/uncategorized/the-pci-security-standards-council/?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=the-pci-security-standards-council http://www.digital-asset-protection.com/uncategorized/the-pci-security-standards-council/#comments Fri, 16 Sep 2011 13:20:38 +0000 Mod M http://www.digital-asset-protection.com/?p=176

The PCI Security Standards Council, otherwise known as the PCI SSC is responsible for creating standards and material to support and enhance payment card data security for organizations. They have created the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). An information security standard for organizations that handles any kid of card holder information for any of the major credit card companies.

The PCI DSS is now a worldwide security standard that’s purpose as explained by the PCI SSC is to “help organizations that process card payments prevent credit card fraud, hacking and various other security vulnerabilities and threats”. Therefore all organizations who are storing, processing or transmitting payment card data must be PCI DSS compliment.

What Is Required To Comply With PCI Standards?

The PCI standard for merchants and payment card processors consists of 12 requirements that specify the framework for a secure payment environment. The essence as described by the PCI Security Standards Council can be viewed in three steps:

1.Assess – To begin with, identifying all the risks that may pose a threat to the cardholder data being transmitted, processed or stored by a business will be carried out. Having sight of the route that the information flows from beginning to end is also a vital aspect to consider.

2.Remediate – This stage is focussed on fixing vulnerabilities which will include scanning the network with software tools to find vulnerabilities and then a classifying and ranking of the vulnerability will take place. Prioritise from most serious to least serious. Then fixes or workarounds will be chosen that are best suited to hopefully cover all the vulnerabilities that existed.

3.Report – Reports will be carried out regularly to maintain PCI compliant. This is carried out by submitting a quarterly scan report which will be completed by a PCI SSC approved ASV.

There is also the choice of taking a self-assessment questionnaire (SAQ) that can be completed by merchants where an on-site PCE DSS assessment requirement is not required.

Why Comply With PCI Security Standards?

If you are new to the online world or just recently started selling products online then these standards will be of high importance for many reasons:

Being compliment will allow your systems to be secure and will allow customers to have trust when making purchases online. Particularly in an age where fraud is high and consumers are wary. Making your site secure and safe to protect from any future attack will help prevent any kind of breach and theft of personal consumer data that could have a negative effect on the organization or brands name. Being part of the solution, against payment card data breaches. Create the ability to improve the efficiency of the IT infrastructure and helping establish a corporate security strategy.

Who Should Meet with PCI Security Standards?

The PCI DSS applies to all entities that store, process or transmit cardholder data. The PCI DSS complience will also apply to the overall environment. Including any third parties being used that may store, process or transmit cardholder data. Third party vendors can range from software vendors, web hosting vendors, payment service providers and till and EPOS vendors to name a few.

Other aspects are currently being looked at also to help ensure safety when using consumers card information. Such as advances being made in ATM software and the companies offering full range of services that cover PCI DSS testing making consumers data safe and preventing any kind of future attack.
